What is this?
- For now ... A site which makes possible for you to:
- Self host photo albums from the comfort of your computer
- Remotely access your files from your computer
- Later ... we'll see.
What's good about it?
- Safety
- Your photos are hosted where they belong: on your computer. We don't host them...
- ...so you are in full control of your intellectual property.
- Remote access to your files
- A pretty easy to setup way to access remotely your files from your computer. No VPN or advanced setup is required.
- You always can turn off the shares, even if you are not at your computer
- Privacy
- No advanced image recognition algorithms crawl your photos and bombard you with personalized content.
- We don't track your browsing habits, likes and dislikes.
- No cookies. Period. We like cakes.
What's bad about it?
- Doubled network speed: once from your hosting machine to cloudy.sh server, and from there to the browser.
- Your hosting computer must be online all the time.
How does it work?
- Register to our site. (With all the hassle that comes with it, such as email verification, etc ...)
- Download and install the cloudy.sh client.
- Log in to the site with the client.
- Start creating photo albums in the client.
There are three types of albums:
- Public albums: Always visible from your main page: cloudy.sh/username
- Private albums: Only visible if you log in to the site.
- Restricted albums: A link will be generated for viewing in the client application and you can distribute this link to trusted persons.
- You also can share contents of your folders from your computer
There are two types of shared folders:
- Private shared folders: Only accessible if you log in to the site.
- Restricted shared folders: A link will be generated for viewing in the client application and you can distribute this link to trusted persons.
A few tips:
- You can set expiration date/time, and password access for your restricted albums.
- You can allow the download of file/browse of subfolders of the specific shared folder from the client application.
Good to know and technical FAQ
Here we list a few items that might get you out of trouble while installing, running and removing the cloudy.sh client application.
Running
- You can have the client installed on more than one computer. Use your registered user to log in to all of them.
- Under Linux, if you are installing the snap version from snapcraft.io be aware that it runs in a sandbox and has access only to your home folder.
- While using older Gnome 3 desktops, the tray icon of the application will not show. In this case just run again the application and that will bring up the old applications' window.
- On some Linuxes you will need to install libcurl to have the app running properly.
We recommend to:
- Keep your shares alive for a short amount of time, such as when you need to transfer a file from a computer to another and have no other meaningful possibilities, create a private shared folder, do the copying and turn off the share either from the web or from the client when done.
- We recommend creating short lived folders, with only the copies of your data you want to share.
- In case you need to share data with others create a dedicated shared folder, send the link, and after you have the confirmation of receipt simply delete the shared folder.
- Do not share your home folder, root folder of your computer, network shares, folders containing important information, or folders where you don't have a full overview of their content.
